AN ELLAND ROAD CUP-TIE.

THE MEETING OF LEEDS UNITED and BRADFORD C.

(WEST RIDING SENIOR CUP - FIRST ROUND)

The meeting of Leeds United and Bradford City in the first round of the West Riding Senior Cup attracted a fair crowd to the Elland Road ground this afternoon. This is the first time the United have met their First Division neighbours, and, as both teams turned out full representative teams, there was a little more than ordinary interest in the tie. The Leeds United supporters had a special interest in the appearance of Howarth, the new centre forward from Bristol, who signalised his first appearance with the team at Bury on Saturday by scoring a goal. Leeds United played the same team as on Saturday, viz: Down; Duffield and Frew; Lamph, Baker and Walton; Thompson, Musgrove, Howarth, Ellson and Wood.

Bradford City introduced Berrington in Boocock's place in the back division. Their team was as follows: Ewart; Potts and Berrington; Hargreaves, Storer and Duckett; Bond, Logan, Hibbert, McIlvenny and Rigby.

Bradford won the toss and opened the game with the wind to their backs. Bradford opened strongly with a manoeuver on the right, but Frew easily cleared. Then the United left wing had a look in. Wood and Ellson co-operated effectively and took play well into the City half, where Potts had difficulty in making a clearance. The gusty wind played some queer pranks with the ball, which bounced and swerved in a deceptive manner. The City continued to have the better of the game but they found the defence of Down and his backs solid. Once McIlvenny tried a long drive which Down negotiated cleverly. Bond got away on the right, but the wind carried his centre out of play. After thirty-five minutes' play Bradford took the lead with a goal scored by Logan. The shot was a long one and looked as thoughit could be easily saved, but the ball beat Down in an amazingly simple fashion. A moment later Down saved from Storer and then took the ball from the feet of a couple of players in excellent style. Bradford were doing practically all the attacking, and the United were having a very busy time. Then Bradford were penalised for a foul and Ewart was called upon to handle for the first time. The United were having an equal share of the attacking now. Then came a surprise, Bond charged Frew and the referee awarded a free-kick. Bond apparently disputed the decision of the referee and was promptly ordered from the field.

Half Time Score:- Bradford City 1 Leeds United 0

After the Leeds goal had survived a hot attack, Wood got away on the United left wing, and Ewart had to be nippy and get the ball away. There was another lively discussion in front of the goal when the referee awarded a penalty to Leeds for a foul. Baker took the kick and hit the crossbar. Howarth tried a hard shot which Ewart saved, and then Leeds were awarded another penalty, this time for hands. Howarth gave Ewart no chance, and put the teams on level terms.

RESULT:- LEEDS UNITED 1 BRADFORD CITY 1
